Their heroes and villains were all over the map: a tortured Harlem teen, a silver-tongued Nazi, a sexy frequent flier, a danger-junkie soldier on Iraq’s front lines. Now the actors who brought these characters to the big screen all have one thing in common: an Oscar dream. In this exclusive LIFE portrait gallery, photographer Jeff Vespa captures moments with 11 actors enjoying awards-season buzz — including our stunning cover star, Up in the Air’s Vera Farmiga, who’ll be hoping to hear her name called as a Best Supporting Actress nominee come Feb. 2.

At the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, where she is promoting her new movie The Invention of Lying, Jennifer Garner is among the stars who dropped by photographer Jeff Vespa’s studio.

“Nothing is better than making Ricky laugh,” Garner said of her Invention of Lying director Gervais. “He has the best laugh in the world. You know it’s genuine … It’s like a badge of honor to make him laugh.”

As the festival continues (it runs through Sept. 19), get exclusive first looks at some of of Vespa’s portraits of the stars.

Miley Cyrus Life.com’s First Cover Girl

Miley Cyrus Life.com Cover Girl

With “Hannah Montana: The Movie” due to hit theaters on April 10, its 16-year-old star Miley Cyrus is busier than ever. Celebrity photographer and LIFE editor-at-large Jeff Vespa trailed the teenager as she jetted from her home to interviews to studio performances to an awards show, and found her to be gracious and gorgeous under even the most ridiculous time restraints. Case in point: the portrait shoot for this cover, which Vespa had to nail in the seconds before Miley left the Four Seasons Hotel for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. “She gets her makeup done, we move the makeup chair out of the way, [my assistant] holds up a paper roll behind her head, I get 14 frames in 11 seconds, and we run out the door,” he remembers.
